Since the further development of the corona virus in Germany has to be assessed rather pessimistically and since it is very unlikely that young people from other countries will now decide to come to Germany in four months (maybe they even are not allowed to do so), we decided
to postpone the International Summer Camp at the SFN until autumn. It now takes place from Sat, 3.10. to Fri, 16.10. on the same terms. Then we will also form the new German-Siberian research teams, perhaps then really also German-Chinese teams.

you will find  a new flyer and a reservation form in a few days here.

The decision was not an easy one for us, but we see no other option due to the global development. We would be very happy if you would also take part in the new camp at the new date two months later.

For everyone from Northern Hesse: Despite everything, the SFN is open every afternoon in the 4th and 5th week of the summer vacation.
We also organize workshops and a leisure program so that you can work on your projects, but also spend time together. At the end of the school year, you can register your interest in this replacement program.

What is the International Research Summer Camp IRSC 2020?

About 30 young people from China, Russia, Italy, Germany and other countries will meet for two weeks at the SFN in Kassel to work on joint research projects.

You can choose the topics yourself. You will be advised and supervised by teachers and students.
The diverse facility of the SFN is at your disposal.

In addition, there is a leisure program, in which one also gets to know the North Hessian landscape.

What does it cost?

What is the SFN?

The Young Student Research Center of the University of Kassel is located in Kassel, Parkstr. 16  and is open for high school students of all schools in Kassel and Nothern Hess.
We have special promotional programms for high gifted students and attention deficit disorder.

We have our own buildings:
Research Center: 4 floors and about 750 m² of research area
Storage: 150 m²

Our special equipment:
workshop, electron microscope, devices for single photon measurements, laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology, observatory with 7 telescopes, library, high speed camera, infrared camera, vacuum chamber for Ultra High Vacuum, acoustic laboratory, laser
laboratory, free fall tower, genetic laboratory and a lot of other rooms for the research groups.

The students (age 13 – 19) work in small teams. They work on interesting and up-to-date subjects from science (physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, IT, geophysics, mathematics,
engineering). They acquire the necessary knowledge on their own.

After choosing their research topics during the first months of their studies, they begin to solve their problems and questions by themselves with the help of open-ended experiments inwhich they use real scientific methods.

Younger students (age 10-13) work on interesting projects and learn the expert knowledge without instruction by teachers, in particular they practice their soft-skills.

Teachers and student-teachers act only as advisors, not as instructors, they train the students in soft-skills and self-organization concerning their work.
We arrange contacts between experts at universities and enterprises which very often sponsor the equipment for the experiments.

The student research teams work on an issue for one or two years. After that some of them take part in the competition „Jugend forscht“; usually with great success. Every year they win state awards, 2006, 2009, 2011,2014, 2015 and 2018 even the national awards in physics,
engineering, astronomy and biology. 2009, 2013 and 2015 we take part in the european science contest. 2014 our team got the national award of the GYPT. 2015 we got world wide the first award in chemistry (ISEF).
In the last years our teams got a lot of international awards (CASTIC, ISEF) too.

The concept of the SFN  is unique in Germany and has won a lot of important national wards.

Our staff: 20 teachers (High school), 25 university students
Participants: 400 students age 10 to 19 coming from 45 schools
We have a lot of experience in European and world-wide cooperation with other schools.
